Uridine triacetate (Vistogard)

Vistogard (uridine triacetate) is a medication used for the emergency treatment of adults and children who have received an overdose of the chemotherapy drugs fluorouracil or capecitabine, or who develop severe or life-threatening toxicities from these drugs.

It is an antidote that helps protect healthy cells from the damage caused by these cancer medications.

Uridine triacetate is a pyrimidine analog.

It counteracts the toxic effects of fluorouracil (5-FU) or capecitabine (Xeloda) chemotherapy on normal, healthy cells, particularly those in the heart, nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, and bone marrow.

For best results, uridine triacetate must be administered as soon as possible, and within 96 hours (4 days) after the end of the fluorouracil or capecitabine administration.

The usual dose is one 10-gram packet mixed with soft food, like applesauce, pudding, or yogurt, every 6 hours for a total of 20 doses.

Pediatrics: Dosing is based on body surface area (BSA) and is also administered every 6 hours for 20 doses, not to exceed 10 grams per dose.

Usage Limitations: It is not intended for non-emergency or routine treatment of mild side effects, as it may lessen the anti-cancer effects of the chemotherapy drugs.

Common Side Effects: The most common side effects reported in clinical studies were vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.
