Staphylococcus epidermidis

Part of normal skin flora, but are increasingly associated with infections on prosthetic heart valves, intravascular catheters and ventricular shunts.

Can be a contaminant of blood cultures but in appropriate clinical settings must be considered a pathogen.

Usually resistant to beta-lactams but sensitive to vancomycin.
