GLUT1

A protein that transports glucose across the cell membrane, supplying cancer cells with the high levels of the nutrients they need to survive.

Also transports the oxidized form of vitamin C, dehydroascorbic acid into the cell.

KRAS positive cells make unusually large amounts of GLUT1.

SLC2A1 gene is responsible for GLUT1.

Glut1 deficiency, in which a defective transporter results in poor ability to transport glucose to cross the blood brain barrier, manifesting with expected severe neurologic symptoms within the first six months of life-epileptic encephalopathy, global developmental delay, complex moving disorders, and paroxysmal event triggered by exercise, exertion, or fasting.

In Glut1 deficiency a strict ketogenic diet which increases ketones in the blood can be used as an alternative energy source in the brain.
