Ear pain

Ear pain can have several different causes.

Ear pain, otalgia, is a common symptom, often caused by infections or other underlying conditions affecting the ear or nearby structures.

Most cases are not serious, but some may require medical attention, especially if symptoms persist or are severe.

Common causes of ear pain:

Ear infections-middle ear or outer ear) Middle ear infection (otitis media) is ore frequent in children, usually with acute onset and can cause fever, irritability, hearing changes, and sometimes discharge. Outer ear infection (otitis externa, or swimmer’s ear): Can affect both children and adults, often associated with water exposure or irritation of the ear canal, presenting with itching, pain, and sometimes discharge. Earwax buildup-Can block the canal and cause discomfort or pain. Changes in air pressure-Eustachian tube dysfunction resulting in fluid buildup and pressure behind the eardrum. TMJ problems Sinus infections or sore throat Swimmer’s ear Injury to the ear Tooth infection or abscess: Dental problems occasionally refer pain to the ear

Temporary relief measures:

Over-the-counter pain relievers Warm compress applied to the outside of the ear Avoiding inserting anything into the ear canal
