Vacuum assisted closure (VAC)

Open cell foam dressing placed into the wound cavity and applies a controlled subatmospheric pressure, typically below 125 mm HG.

Leads to removal of edema and increases blood flow while the applied force enhances formation of granulation tissue.

Stimulates the growth of granulation tissue to obtain closure.

Process may be applied to acute, subacute and chronic wounds.

Traditional management includes twice or more often wet to moist gauze dressing changes compared to this system which is closed with dressings changed every 48 hours.

An occlusive dressing that removes exudate while maintaining moisture in the wound.

Compared to wet to moist dressings associated with less inflammation.

Can be applied to a variety of wound defects and sites.
