Urethritis

Defined as urethral inflammation.

Commonly caused by urogenital infection.

Classified as gonococcal urethritis if caused by Neisseria gonorrhea, or nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) if inflammatory process is not related to gonococcal infection.

More than 4 million cases of nongonococcal urethritis in men annually in the U.S.

Associated with urethral discharge, burning on urination, and increased frequency of urination.

May be associated with spontaneous urethral discharge or discharge associated with stripping of the urethra.

Urethral tenderness and erythema may occur.

NGU incubation period is 7-14 days following sexual contact with infected partner.

Up to 50% of infected patients with NGU are asymptomatic.
