Typhlitis

A complication of neutropenia.

Inflammatory process involve the cecum, appendix and occasionally the ascending colon and terminal ileum.

Present with abdominal pain and distension and is seen in hematologic malignancies and HIV infection.

Involves host immunity, bowel inflammation, mucosal injury and bacterial overgrowth.

Treatment consists of bowel rest, I.V. fluids and broad-spectrum antibiotics.
