Tumor suppressor genes

Suppress the formation of metastases without affecting the growth rate of the primary tumor.

Involved in cell cycle regulation including proliferation and differentiation.

Inactivation of such genes occur mainly through allelic deletion followed by point mutation of the remaining allele.

Include TP53, retinoblastoma (RB) and PTEN (phosphate and tensin homolog) genes and are the most common genetic alterations in human tumors.
