Tracheoesophageal fistula

approximately 80% of acquired lesions due to malignant disease of the esophagus or chest.

Easily diagnosed with barium swallow examination.

Gastrografin ( diatrizoate meglumine) should be avoided since it can cause chemical pneumonitis.

Can be caused rarely by tuberculosis, radiation injury, congenital abnormalities, post surgical or post procedural lesions, broncholithiasis and Barrett’s esophagus.
