Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT)

Allows improved conformation of the radiation fields to the target volume and reduces the dose to normal tissues.

Allows the use of higher does of radiation than conventional treatment.

Integrates computed tomography imaging directly into treatment planning process.

A method for shaping treatment fields on the basis of precise knowledge of the patient’s three dimensional internal geometry.

Beams are fashioned with tight margins to conform to the projected outline of the target or combination of targets.

Major limitation is its inability to account for indentations in targets where critical structures invaginate at the surface.
