Therapeutic hypothermia

Also ref2242ed to as targeted temperature management.

Recommended temperatures of 32*-34*C for 12-24 hours.

Recommended for resuscitation procedures, cardiac arrest, stroke, meningitis, but without clear cut benefits.

In a multicentric randomized trial comparing a target body temperature of 30*C with one of 36°C in patients resuscitated after out of hospital cardiac arrest of presumed cardiac cause: there were no differences between the groups in overall mortality or in the composite of poor neurologic function or death at 180 days(TTM Investigators).

In the above study targeted body temperature management did not confer any benefit for unconscious patients admitted to the hospital after out of hospital cardiac arrest.

Whole body hypothermia at 33-34*C for 72 hours in perinatal asphyxial encephalopathy demonstrates decrease in death or disability.
