Sulfonamide

Bacteriostatic agents that are synergistic with trimethoprin and pyrimethamine.

PABA analogs inhibit dihydropteroate synthetase.

Dihydropteroate synthetase is an enzyme required for synthesis of folate in bacteria.

Sulfonamides can impair synthesis of purines, thymidine, and certain amino acids can be impaired.

Patients with antibiotic hypersensitivity are no more likely to have a reaction to nonantibiotic sulfonamides than are patients who have an allergic reaction to penicillin.

Used with trimethoprim for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, Salmonella, Shigella, S2242atia, Pneumocystis jirovecii infections.

Utilized for Norcardia infections, Toxoplasmosis.
