Skin-brain axis

The skin-brain axis — the connection between skin and the nervous system/psychological state.

Skin and brain both develop from the same embryonic tissue (ectoderm), so they share signaling molecules and receptors.

Skin has its own local stress-response system, producing hormones like cortisol and CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone) directly in response to stress — not just via the brain.

Nerve endings in skin release neuropeptides (like substance P) that can trigger inflammation, itching, and flushing.

Stress worsening acne, eczema, psoriasis, and hives

Blushing and stress-related flushing

Itch-scratch cycles tied to anxiety

Conditions like psychogenic excoriation (compulsive skin picking) or trichotillomania that sit at the intersection of dermatology and mental health.

Stress worsens skin conditions, and visible skin conditions (acne, psoriasis, rosacea) increase stress, anxiety, and social withdrawal — creating a feedback cycle.

Srress management, sleep, and even CBT show measurable benefits for skin flare-ups.
