Herniations of the intervertebral disc thorough the vertebral end-plate.

Associated with trauma, especially in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae.

Possibly of congenital origin of a vertebral end-plate defect.

Suspected spine epiphyseal plate weak spot of annular attachment, which allows extrusion of some disc material causing an interbody nuclear herniation.

Higher frequency in adolescent males at lower thoracic and upper levels.

Could predispose the disc to degenerative changes.

Many patients present with back pain.

Examination shows tenderness over the involved vertebrae.

X-rays include anterior wedging f adjacent vertebral bodies.

Dorsolumbar kyphosis may be associated.

A self-limited process and usually does not require extensive treatment.
