Risk factors include: female gender, history of motion sickness, history of postoperative nausea and vomiting, mask ventilation, use of volatile anesthetics, opioids and surgical factors.
Complicates as many as 50% of surgical procedures.
Particularly common with the use of nitrous oxide inhalation anesthetic.
