Portal vein gas

Associated with a mortality rate of 75-90%.

Mostly related to mesenteric ischemia and bowel necrosis.

Can be seen with Crohn’s disease, following radiofrequency ablation, cholangitis, blunt abdominal trauma, anastomotic leaks, and chemoradiotherapy.

Can be seen by CT scan of the abdomen and ultrasound.
