Osteitis fibrosa cystica

Classically seen in primary hyperparathyroidism, and is rare today.

Used to be seen with chronic renal insufficiency.

Postulated that hyperparathyroidism vitamin D deficiency have a role in the development of lesions.

Associated with generalized bone demineralization, subperiosteal bone resorption with cortical thinning, bone cysts and brown tumors (osteoclastomas) which are lytic bone lesions.

Radiographs of the skull reveal salt and pepper changes with loss of cortical definition.

MRI changes of the bone marrow may show fibrovascular changes.
