Geriatric syndromes

Clinical syndromes that are highly prevalent in older adults, especially the vulnerable or frail, and not attributable to a specific disease category.

Result of accumulated effects of impairment making elderly vulnerable to situational challenges (Tinetti ME et al).

Include sleep disorders, problems with eating or feeding, incontinence, vision and hearing problems, confusion, falls, and skin break- down, delirium, depression, dementia, osteoporosis, impaired nutrition and pain.

Associated with greater likelihood of hospitalization and mortality.
