Fetal cells

Enter the maternal circulation during pregnancy.

Persist in maternal blood or tissues for decades in a state of microchimerism.

Male cells of fetal origin have been detected in 30-50% of women with prior male pregnancies.

Found in higher numbers in women with some autoimmune diseases.

The majority of fetal cells that enter the maternal circulation are hematopoietic but trophoblasts and mesenchymal cells also circulate.
