Femoral Fracture

Intramedullary nailing pref2242ed treatment for fractures of the femoral shaft.

Treatment of displaced fracture consists of hemiarthroplasty or the use of multiple cannulated screws.

Displaced fracture mortality rate after 2 years is 23% and rate of treatment failure is 42% in the internal fixation group compared to 6% in the arthroplasty group. Primary arthroplasty is the treatment of choice for patients at least 70 years of age who have displaced femoral neck fracture.

Mortality rates of 18% at 90 days for femoral neck fractures have been recorded.
