Diverticula of the gastrointestinal tract

Often without symptoms, but if they become distended with food, liquid or stool and compress the lumen or allow bacterial overgrowth, or become inflamed or bleed, symptoms may occur.

Zenker’s diverticulum, hypopharyngeal diverticulum, is present in about 2% of individuals with dysphasia.

Zenker’s diverticulum occur primarily after the age of 70 years.
