Coude catheter





A Coude catheter navigates the S-shaped curve of the bulbous urethra, which is exaggerated in prostate hypertrophy.



History of urethral strictures is acontraindication  to use, with a higher risk for false tracts.



Lidocaine is injected into the meatus / distal urethra of the penis, inserting  the curved tip pointing up.



Gentle, continuous pressure is applied until it passes the resistance point.



The coude is advanced until the hub is at the glans with urine return through catheter.



Complications: the creation or extension of false tracts.
