Colon fistula

Can arise from inflammatory bowel disease, surgery, radiation, trauma and malignancy.

Most common cause is diverticulitis with 2% of cases developing fistulae.

Diverticulitis induced fistulae require surgical repair in 17-27% of cases.

Symptoms vary with etiology, location and severity.

Colocutaneous fistula is a fistulous tract between skin and colon resulting in low output and arises from anastomotic leaks, anastomosis with infection and fecal leakage and trauma the colon.
