Rapid urease test for Helicobacter pylori infection of the stomach.
Gastric biopsy taken during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is applied to a dry urea impregnated pad and if H. pylori is present in the stomach the incubated pad produces urea which is hydrolyzed to ammonia gas which changes the color of a pH indictor.
Phenol red dye turns pink when pH is 6.0 or greater.
Only half hour needed for test results which has a 98% sensitivity and 100% specificity.
Invasive test of choice for diagnosis of H. pylori.
