Anaerobic organism that is the most numerous bacterial pathogen in the normal colon.
Has a polysaccharide capsule which inhibits phagocytosis and causes abscess formation.
Usually sensitive to metronidazole, clindamycin or ampicillin/sulbactam.
Elaborates enzymes that degrade heparin and can cause thrombophlebitis.
