Atypical small acinar proliferation (ASAP) of the prostate

A focus of atypical glands suspicious for malignancy.

Includes adenosis, atypical adenomatous hyperplasia, intraductal hyperplasia, and acinar hyperplasia.

May mimic cancer and in many cases focal cancer may be present.

Histological changes inadequate to establish a diagnosis of cancer.

Identified in 0.5-23% of needle biopsies of the prostate with a mean number of 5.5%.
