Anterior mediastinum

Contains the thymus, lymph nodes, ascending aorta, pulmonary artery, phrenic nerves and thyroid.

Most common lesions are thymic or lymph node in origin.

Primary lesions are thymomas, teratoma, thyroid and lymphoid.

Thymomas account for about 50% of all anterior mediastinal tumors.

The differential diagnosis of an anterior mediastinal mass includes thymomas, lymphomas, germ cell tumors, and endocrine tumors.
