Acute chest syndrome

Refers to the presence of a new lung infiltrate, with chest pain, fever, tachypnea, dyspnea, hypoxia, leucocytosis, cough or wheezing in a patient with sickle cell disease.

Repeated episodes associated with the development of chronic lung disease, progressive hypoxia and decreased survival.
