Defined as systolic blood pressure of 130-139 mm Hg and diastolic pressure of 85-89 mm Hg.

Estimated 70 million people in U.S. have this condition destined to progress to hypertension.

A precursor to hypertension and associated with excess morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular causes.

Transition to hypertension reflects changes in arteriolar hypertrophy, endothelial dysfunction, increased vasoconstriction and diminished vasodilation.

Current treatment includes lifestyle modifications with weight loss, exercise and sodium restriction.

Lifestyle modifications are implemented before drug treatments are initiated.
