P-Glycoprotein

170-kd cell surface glycoprotein encoded for by the mdrl gene, which mediates tumor resistance in many tumors.

Functions in tumor cells as an efflux pump with ability to expel agents including anticancer drugs.

Its presence is an independent, poor prognostic factor in several hematological, lymphoid and sold tumor malignancies.

P-glycoprotein is a transmembrane efflux pump limiting systemic exposure to many drugs by inhibiting GI absorption.

The inhibition of P-glycoprotein by azoles may lead to increased systemic exposure of drugs affected by this transport system.
