Liquorice contains anti-inflammatory compounds like glycyrrhizin

Traditionally used for sore throat and respiratory infections.

Contains antioxidants that may support immune function

Potential risks and side effects:

Can cause high blood pressure due to glycyrrhizin affecting mineral balance.

May lower potassium levels in the body

Can interact with certain medications, especially those for: – Heart conditions – Blood pressure – Diuretics – Steroids

– Excessive consumption during pregnancy may increase risk of premature birth

People with heart conditions, kidney disease, liver disease or high blood pressure should be cautious.

The FDA recommends limiting consumption, especially of concentrated forms

Most of these concerns apply primarily to regular consumption of real liquorice root or concentrated extracts, rather than occasional candy which often contains artificial flavoring instead of real liquorice.
