Neurologic consequences of deposition of uncongugated bilirubin in brain tissue.
American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exchange transfusion for full-term healthy newborns at least 4 days of age if total serum bilirubin level is 25 mg/dL or more and does not decrease sufficiently with phototherapy.
Detected in 8% of infants with Rh associated hemolysis who have a bilirubin concentration of 19-24 mg per deciliter, 33% of infants with concentrations of 25-29 mg per deciliter and 73% of infants with concentrations of 3-40 mg per deciliter.
