Refers to complete loss of contact between joint surfaces and described by the position of the distal bone in relation to its proximal articulation.
All such joint abnormalities, especially if neurovascular compromise is present, should be emergently reduced, usually be longitudinal traction.
Reduction reduces risk of soft tissue compromise by pressure necrosis and neurovascular damage.
Post reduction x-rays are required to confirm adequate reduction and to reevaluate the possibility that associated fractures are present.
