Declinism

It is the predisposition, possibly due to cognitive bias, such as rosy retrospection, to view the past more favorably and future negatively.

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, published between 1776 and 1788, which argues that the Roman Empire collapsed because of the gradual loss of civic virtue among its citizens, who became lazy, spoiled and inclined to hire foreign mercenaries to handle the defense of state. 

Declinism is a perception, often seen in societies or individuals, that there is a continuous, irreversible decline in the current status of society, culture, or civilization. 

It typically involves a negative outlook on the future or a belief that progress is coming to an end or reversing. 

Declinism can manifest in various ways, such as pessimism about economic, political, or social conditions, dissatisfaction with cultural values or morals, or even apocalyptic fears. 

Some argue that declinism can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy, as the belief in decline can discourage action towards progress and improvement.

Declinism is a reminiscence bump in which older people tend to remember events that happened to them at around the ages of 10-30.

As people get older, they tend to experience fewer negative emotions, and they’re more likely to remember positive things over negative things.

Emotionally negative events are likely to have more impact on your thoughts and behaviors than a similar, but positive, event.

Declinism provides a warning and a goad to action in order to head off and reverse the decline that it says is taking place, an expression of the tendency toward self-criticism and continual improvement.

Obsessively fretting about possible decline can be a good way to produce it.

American decline is the idea that the United States of America is diminishing: in power geopolitically, militarily, financially, economically, demographically, socially, morally, spiritually, culturally, healthcare, and/or on environmental issues.
