Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome

A condition in which children hypoventilate and retain carbon dioxide with prominent apnea periods, and severely diminished carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide retention occurs especially in sleep.

The diminished carbon dioxide chemoreflex prevents increased breathing in response to elevated carbon dioxide levels.

Caused by a mutation in PHOX2B Gene.

Patient presently require lifelong ventilatory support during sleep.
