Refers to an injury to the tendons of the finger in which the fingers middle joint, called the PIP joint, bends downward while the fingertip or DIP joint bends up or hyperextends.
Generally caused by a forceful blow to a bent finger.
Can develop immediately following an injury or may develop 7 to 21 days later.
Typically the middle joint cannot be straightened.
Signs of swelling and tenderness over the top of the finger may be present.
Treatment options may include a splint and hand physical therapy.
For severe joint deformity surgery may be required.
