Conscious sedation

Also known as procedural sedation and analgesia, uses sedative analgesic and dissociative drugs to provide sedation, analgesia and motor control during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Relieves anxiety, pain and discomfort, and expedites cooperation of patients allowing them to be still during a procedure.

Require pulse oximetry, cardiac monitoring, blood pressure, and close observation.

Must be prepared for airway management.

Emergency intervention may be needed with reversal agents such as naloxone or flumazenil, oxygen and intubation equipment.

Cardiac monitor, pulse oximeter, blood pressure monitors ad possible capnography should be in place prior to institution of this procedure.

Pref2242ed route of administration of drugs is intravenous, enabling repeat dosing and titration for clinical effect.

Depth determined by basis of responsiveness to verbal or nonverbal stimuli.

Observer’s Assessment of Alertness/Sedation Scale: 5=awake, 4=sedated but oriented and arousable to verbal commands, 3=responds only to loud and repeated verbal commands, 2= unresponsive to all but prodding and shaking, 1= reactive only to pain and 0= unresponsive.

Light sedation refers to a score of 3-4.

Deep sedation refers to a score of 1-2.

General anesthesia refers to a score of 0.
