Aminosalicylate prodrug metabolized in the colon releasing its active form 5-aminosalicyclic acid or mesalamine.
Mesalamine is essentially sulfasalazine without the sulfa moiety.
As effective as mesalamine or sulfasalazine in mild-moderate ulcerative colitis and has a better adverse toxicity profile.
May be associated with interstitial lung disease.
