Vonoprazan (brand name Voquezna) is a novel potassium-competitive acid blocker (PCAB) used to treat erosive esophagitis, GERD, and H. pylori infections.
It provides faster, more potent, and longer-lasting stomach acid suppression than traditional proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
Vonoprazan is prescribed in adults for:
Erosive Esophagitis: Heals acid-related damage to the esophagus and maintains that healing.
GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease): Provides relief from heartburn and related symptoms.
H. pylori Infections: Used in combination packages with antibiotics (such as amoxicillin and clarithromycin) to eliminate the bacteria that cause gastrointestinal ulcers.
Unlike traditional PPIs, which require activation by stomach acid and bind slowly to proton pumps, vonoprazan works independently of stomach acid levels.
It immediately blocks potassium ions from binding to gastric proton pumps, resulting in rapid and potent acid suppression from the very first dose.
Oral tablet, taken once or twice a day with or without food.
Important Rule: Swallow tablets whole.
Dosage:Treating H. pylori typically involves a 14-day combination kit with vonoprazan and multiple antibiotics.
Side Effects & Precautions While generally well-tolerated, some patients may experience:
Diarrhea or nausea Abdominal pain or indigestion Headache
Avoid taking vonoprazan with allergic reactions to it.
Vonoprazan can interact with certain medications that rely on stomach pH for absorption or drugs that affect specific liver enzymes.
Long-term use may increase the risk of infectious diarrhea or low magnesium blood levels.
