Lipedema

Lipedema is a chronic medical condition characterized by a symmetrical buildup of fat in the legs, hips, and sometimes arms, while typically sparing the hands and feet.

Lipedema almost exclusively affects women and is often triggered by hormonal changes like puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.

The fat accumulation is usually identical on both sides of the body.

This specific type of fat is notoriously resistant to traditional weight-loss methods like diet and exercise.

Affected areas may feel tender, painful, or heavy, and the fat can have a nodular texture, under the skin.

The skin over lipedema fat often bruises easily.

A sharp cutoff of fat at the ankles or wrists is a common diagnostic indicator.

Lipedema is frequently misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphedema.

Management focuses on symptom relief and preventing progression:

Conservative Care:

Includes Compression Therapy to reduce swelling, and low-impact exercises like swimming.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A specialized massage to help move fluid.

Surgical Options: Specialized lymph-sparing liposuction can remove the diseased tissue and improve mobility.
