Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)

Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat urinary symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), providing immediate and long-term relief by removing excess prostate tissue with a laser.

HoLEP is designed for men with moderate to severe symptoms of BPH, a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that constricts urine flow and can cause bladder and kidney issues.

The procedure uses a holmium laser to remove the prostate tissue pressing against the urethra restoring normal urinary flow.

Performed under anesthesia, typically via a scope inserted through the urethra.

The holmium laser precisely cuts and enucleates the excess prostate tissue, which is then extracted from the bladder using a morcellator.

Tissue removed during HoLEP is available for further pathological examination, such as screening for prostate cancer.

It is a suitable for any prostate size, including very large glands, and commonly recommended for those who have failed other treatments.

Benefits:

Immediate improvement in urine flow and symptom relief.

Provides long-lasting results with a re-treatment rate of less than 2%.

Minimal bleeding due to the laser’s shallow penetration, with a lower risk for transfusions and useful for patients on blood thinners.

Short hospital stay (often 24 hours or less) and rapid return to daily activities.

Next-day catheter removal is common for most patients.

Less pain compared to traditional procedures.

Lower risk of complications compared to methods like transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).

Temporary mild discomfort and increased urinary urgency may occur.

Catheter use is typically needed for 1–2 days post-procedure.

Return to work usually in 2–3 days; full physical activity within two weeks.

An especially valuable procedure for large prostates or those with coexisting health issues that make bleeding a major concern.

HoLEP is a highly effective solution for BPH, offering durable outcomes with minimal risk and fast recovery.
