Purtscher retinopathy

A type of retinopathy due to the activation of complement and agglutination of red blood cells within retinal vessels.

May lead to temporary or permanent blindness.

May be associated with head trauma, acute pancreatitis, vasculitis, and embolization of such materials as fat and amniotic fluid associated with childbirth.

Retina findings indicate ischemia at the posterior pole with edema and hemorrhages concentrated around the optic disc.

No effective treatment.
